GPS 2013

Boas pedaladas,

Pedaladas bOas,
Casf

Nota: Agradeço fotos do António Cabaço e Fernando Micaelo

Good cycling,

Meteorology indicated some rain but the sun took his revenge. My fasting blood glucose was very well, 146mg/dL, I reduced basal and fast insulin, in the proportions, by the effort I would expend (I remember there are no rules, understanding our diabetes is a matter of years and training, see the example of blue O Rider, Pedro Felício on 120km Porto Covo-Alvalade-Porto Covo MTB Event, this weekend in Facebook).

With almost all of us on briefing time, Pinto Infante warning to possible occurrences, leaving the groups in the scheduled order. I went with António Cabaço, Valério, and Filipe Salvado.

As is widely known, this GPS guided tour, gathering of groups is consistent and mutual provoked as well, it's a good thing in mountain biking. Pinto, as always, surprises us on this traks, this year he uphill abused, Castelo Novo, Gardunha Mountain...

After Old Bridge, on the way to Alpedrinha, after a photo, I had the normal workshop - patching the inner tube, after warning, António Cabaço I came in my help. He was outraged, even worse when confirms that I still have "Guterres time" patches - I quote - I even apologized with the holes from latest events, but had no excuses...
- "Tubeless and CO2, you have to update"!!!
- "But I've on my 26! And also I had on the LUX!"...
- "Oh Carlos, even more with these wheels (29)... you must upgrade yourself."

We catch the others guys and continue rising! Some fantastic single tracks some needed passages by hand. We passed over the A23 highway on the tunnels entrance, to Alpedrinha for the single supply, we were 2 groups.

Till here the VITARGO ELECTROLYTE concentration and some cereal bars toothed bytes marked 155mg/dL of blood glucose. I ate banana, brought another one, two ham/cheese sandwiches, joined with orange juice and there were a mighty riders they did a “reds” tastes. One bottle had lees, other served to "burn" a rosebush. We didn't left before opened and verify a third bottle. They say, that one, it was really good!!

We continued climbing for a few more kilometres, returning the landscapes offsets. We were closed to Cortiçada antennas when we started the descent to Vale de Prazeres train station and several villages.

Tiredness was already sited in some riders, but friendship/solidarity on this staff is really serious, no one is left behind, "you want some HC GEL?!", said Mike for Cli! Some cherries were harvested, many repeated on several trees, if Pinto knew, would not let us eat the lunch! We went through a dam named Cabrão (I will not translate), finishing in Lardosa.

Baths "burning" in the hot body with water temperature difference. The lunch was divine. The convivial absolutely fantastic.

My blood glucose was quite controlled - not stopped by hypo - I think that contributed was from Vitargo concentration, associated with an "light" ongoing.

Cycling good,
casf

II Trilhos do Lince - Penamacor

Boas pedaladas,

Pedaladas boas,
casf

Good cycling,

This event started before the date itself, in 2012, we did 99km!! Passed through Spain, went up to Malcata Mountain and cycling back to Penamacor, with the possibility to seeing a lynx!! This year, due to poor adherence to 85km, we received an informative email, this distance it was not in - relief and despair.

My fasting blood glucose was 126mg/dL, I reduce the fast and basal insulin units, the basal is the key to a “peaceful” day and the remaining hours. It was the announced cold temperature with blasts, lengthen that impression. I lifted the bag with everything that belonged to me (loved the content, at home, even more!).

When heating I talking with a recently friend, during all briefing time, till they "oblige" us to follow, had already given the started! We've been together for a while, unfortunately for me, we also speak about technical issues. I can say, after this detail, that lately I have with holes, I noticed something soft on the back... 8km were going, I asked him, also because I didn't have GPS, something with the "ON" button!! Confirmed, another event, one more hole! I follow on the possible pace: stop, confirm, fills and refills!

It was not finish! Recognizing the place, we were coming to 1st supply zone, Freixial Camping Park, Águas - Penamacor (was the final Scout camping activities every year), I put my hands into my pockets, no, no blood glucose meter!!! I started having to manage everything much more carefully. I had the impression of being in a high value... The VITARGO ELECTROLYTE was "consistent" and I filled with H2O, ate a banana, orange, a ham sandwich and grabbed two cereals bars. The tire... after a few more "pumped" seemed to hold up.

The Spanish’s from Gata Sierra mark strong presence in this event and we leave "together". For a good kilometer was stopping to fill "my fate", pass nearly streams, I ate cereals bars and some cookies, we passed the 2nd supply (only liquids, on a road "merged" to Spain, where there were technical assistance, but for me was everything okay!), passed through bridges, made some ascents and the Spanish’s disappeared ... I had to fill the tire!

I have a slight resistance to mud (should be from the almost white equipment), but on this event should be a lesson to me. Why I turn away - "happy" - I ended up in a climb, I climb and continued to rise, always thinking I was on the right path till a rather wide intersection. If I haven't seen any indications for some time, there, wasn't nothing (and was well marked: ribbons, arrows and cut way)! I went down almost everything, till find two raiders, but I didn’t demote from what I was already convinced, and so, I "showed them" the way up. Conclusion, we call the Organization, it was to descend. I put my 29 CF SLX looking of "tapes"!!!

There was the mud, and I had to spend though, quickly reach the car, motorbike and the bike broom. We went to 4 elements and headed toward the 3rd supply zone. I could went away and before I descent to the 3rd supply, I cross with a Bambi - white tail - it jumped in front of me on the trail, from one side to another - almost Cape Epic style!

From that supply, I ate on a management basis; half a glass of juice with a cheese sandwich, fruit, a bar and water. I left with a lead of 5 minutes, and quickly got caught, lacked 20km to the finish line. I discovered which led the last holes and with the Organization help we repaired this issue. During these miles was recovering some positions, on some consecutive rises transactions, helped by my weight and this 29 wheel.

I finished well, without hypo symptoms, all the way. Probably I did around 60km... The basal insulin - 24h effect - is critical in this type of activity - aerobic - having your values controlled during the activity, is fundamental the knowledge of your body reactions after activity, avoid hypo episodes, and therefore, putting less insulin, avoid hyperglycemia.

At lunch time I had 116mg/dL.
From 46 riders I finish 38 with 4:38:20h

Cycling good,
casf
